Tokyo Olympics: Brazil and Germany face off on Thursday

After beating the Germans in the final in 2016, the Brazilian team meets the Germans in the premiere of the current edition

It’s time for the premiere. This Thursday, the Brazilian men’s soccer team begins its journey in search of its second gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Brazil will face Germany at 8:30 am (GMT; 8:30 pm local time), at the International Stadium in Yokohama. Both teams were finalists at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, when Brazil got the better of penalties and won the unprecedented title. In addition to the Germans, Brazilians share Group D with Saudi Arabia and Côte d’Ivoire.

For the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, each men’s team managed to take only three athletes over the age of 24 (usually the limit goes up to 23 years, but it was changed due to the postponement of the competition). The three players chosen by Jardine were: goalkeeper Santos, full-back Daniel Alves and defender Diego Carlos.

Among all 22 athletes, Daniel Alves is the oldest in the group, at 38 years old; forward Reinier is the youngest, with 19. In addition to the experienced full-back, the team also has Richarlison and Douglas Luiz, players who had been called up by coach Tite in the Main Team, and now joined André Jardine’s group in gold.

Germany arrives in Tokyo with a promising team. The time will have Max Kruse, Union Berlin forward, and midfielder Nadiem Amiri, in the 4-3-3 scheme of coach Stefan Kuntz.

Probable squad from Brazil: Santos; Daniel Alves, Carlos, Nino, Arana; Luiz, Guimarães, Claudinho; Paulinho, Richarlison, Cunha.

Probable sqaud from Germany: Muller; Henrichs, Pieper, Uduokhai, Raum; Stach, Arnold, Maier; Richter, Kruse, Amiri.
