UFC flyweight Molly McCann says she once fought off sex trafficker while working at Subway

UFC flyweight Molly McCann has 12 official MMA fights to her name, but another one from well before her career might have been even more important.

The 29-year-old Liverpool native recounted quite a story from her younger days during an appearance on The A-Side live chat on Wednesday. The setting: the late shift of a Subway in Liverpool.

From MMA Fighting:

“This blonde girl’s come in, five in the morning, rotten drunk, stumbling over and then this lad followed her in. … And he’s come in and he’s put his arm around her and I went to him, ‘Hey mate, what’s her name?’ He went, ‘What?’ I went, ‘What’s her name,’ because I just didn’t think he knew her. Something in me belly was like, ‘Nah, this is not… no.’ And he’s like, ‘F*ckin’ shut up, love.’ Could you imagine my face, sayin’ that?

“So then she opens her purse and he’s trying to get the money out the purse and I went, ‘‘Ey, mate, what the f*ck?’ And he went, ‘I’m the police. Who are you talkin’ to?’ I said, ‘You’re not the f*ckin’ police.’”

At that point, McCann said the man called for several other men into the Subway. McCann still followed the man out of the shop and physically confronted him.

Soon, the police showed up and made a scary revelation:

“He’s gone to kick me in the head, I’ve leg kicked him, the police have come and took him, I’ve had to go make a statement,” McCann said. “It turns out that he was a sex trafficker and he was trying to take her. They’d watched the cameras and they’d date raped her. They put date rape [drug] in her drink to take her, to steal her, and she would have never been seen again.

“And I was like this [to the police], ‘All in a day’s work, guys!’”

McCann reportedly spoke with the police after the woman in question declined to give a statement. Not much else was needed as the man turned out to be an illegal immigrant who was later deported. Funnily enough, the officer taking McCann’s statement turned out to be another jiu-jitsu practitioner at her gym.

McCann would go onto an MMA career that has her 12-2 and officially ranked as the No. 14 flyweight in UFC. She has won her last three fights, most recently winning by decision against Diana Belbiţă in Oct. 2019.

She also isn’t the only UFC fighter to take down someone dangerous outside of the Octagon. Light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith recounted earlier this month how he had to take down a deranged home invader in his Nebraska house, and strawweight Polyana Viana captured headlines last year when she demolished an attempted mugger in Brazil.
