It was an accident. At Mineirão, Atlético-MG didn’t know about Fortaleza and thrashed by 4-0, in the first game of the semifinal of the Copa do Brasil. The teams will decide their place in the final next Wednesday (27), at Castelão, in the capital of Ceará. As there is no criterion for goals scored away from home, Atlético will qualify if they lose by up to three difference. Any victory by Fortaleza by four goals takes the decision to the penalty shootout.
At the break of the game at Mineirão, Atlético were already winning by 3-0. The score was opened with a great goal by Guilherme Arana in the 18th minute. The move generated complaints from Fortaleza players, who claimed to have heard referee Braulio da Silva Machado’s whistle, indicating a corner kick, when the ball was close to crossing the line.
Galo’s second and third goals came with Rever, head, after a corner kick. At the end of the first stage, in a good move by the Atletico team, Zaracho crossed to the point for Hulk, also head, to expand.
The rout was confirmed in the second minute of the final stage, with another beautiful goal. After a foul hit by Felipe Alves, Zaracho covered the Fortaleza goalkeeper.
