Cuiabá can get access to Serie A for the first time in history

More than three decades later, the state of Mato Grosso may once again have a team in the elite of Brazilian football

Tuesday can be historic for football in Mato Grosso.  More than three decades later, the state may have a representative in the elite of Brazilian football.  The last time this happened was in 1986, when the CEOV (Clube Esportivo Operário Várzea Grandense) competed in the competition.  The 1986 championship was one of the most disorganized in the history of football.  At the time, CBF decided to combine the Gold, Silver and Bronze bowls (which would be Series A, B and C today) into one.  With that, 80 clubs competed for the national championship, with São Paulo taking the best.

In the year in which Cuiabá turns 20, access for the elite of Brazilian football may be the best gift.  For this, the team needs to beat Paraná today, at 9:30 pm, Brasília time, in Vila Capanema.  In addition to winning, the team still needs to root for a CSA stumble over Botafogo-SP, in Ribeirão Preto.  Despite the great campaign of the midwestern club, which occupies third place in the Serie B with 58 points, Cuiabá has not won away from home for three games, with two defeats and a draw.

For the game soon, the top scorer of Cuiabá in Serie B with nine goals, striker Elton, is out for taking the third yellow card.  Jenison is the favorite to be the replacement.  Everton Sena, Lucas Hernandez and Luiz Gustavo, with injuries also miss the team.

On the Paraná side, defender Fabrício and attacking midfielder Thiago Alves are suspended.  Luan remains in the medical department.  Philipe Maia is the favorite in the defense, with Hurtado and Salazar as options.  Andrew is still in doubt.  Paraná is the antepenultimate placed with 36 points and is in the relegation zone for Serie C. Counting on today’s round, there are only three rounds left to the end of the competition.
