Cuiabá loses to Sampaio Corrêa but guarantees unprecedented access to Serie A

By Gustavo Castilho

Draw between CSA and Brasil-RS ensured historic achievement for Dourado

Even before the ball rolled in the Arena Pantanal, Cuiabá already had confirmed access.  This is because CSA drew 1-1 with Brasil de Pelotas, in Maceió, guaranteeing the passport for the elite of Brazilian football of the team of Mato-Grosso.  The 3-1 defeat by Sampaio did not prevent the party night with unprecedented access.  The goals of the match were scored by Jackson, Léo Costa and Dione, on the side of Bolivia Querida.  Felipe Ferreira cashed it for the home owners.

In the year that Cuiabá turns 20, access for the elite of Brazilian football will be the best gift.  The state of Mato Grosso has not had a Serie A club since 1986, when the CEOV (Clube Esportivo Operário Várzea Grandense) competed in the competition.  The 1986 championship was one of the most disorganized in the history of football.  At the time, CBF decided to combine the Gold, Silver and Bronze bowls (which would be Series A, B and C today) into one.  With that, 80 clubs competed for the national championship, with São Paulo taking the best.

With the end of the 37th round, now there is only one more place left for Serie A 2021. Two teams are fighting for the passport to the soccer elite: Juventude and CSA.  The team from Serra Gaúcha is fourth at the moment, with 58 points and will face Guarani in Campinas in the last round.  The CSA appears in the fifth position, with 57 points.  The team goes to Recife to face Náutico, who fights against relegation.  With access already guaranteed, Chapecoense and América-MG now dispute the title of the Brazilian Championship of Series B. Only one point separates the teams.  The Santa Catarina team is the current leader, with 70 points, while the rabbit has 69. In the next round Chape receives Confiança, at Arena Condá, and América faces Avaí, at Independência.

At the bottom of the table, four teams still compete to stay in Serie B, they are: Paraná, with 36 points;  Figueirense, with 39;  Vitória, with 42 and Náutico also with 42 points.  Oeste and Botafogo-SP are already mathematically demoted to Serie C.
