Fortaleza beats São Paulo 3-1 and eliminates São Paulo tricolor from the Brazil Cup

Team advances to the competition’s semifinal for the first time in history

Fortaleza made history. At Arena Castelão, the team had no difficulties and São Paulo by 3-1. After the 2-2 draw in the first leg, at Morumbi, any simple victory would classify one of the teams. The club had never reached the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil and had already equaled the best campaign in the tournament, in 2001, when they also appeared in the quarterfinals of the competition. Now Leão faces Atlético-MG.

At the edge of the pitch, coaches Juan Pablo Vojvoda and Hernán Crespo faced each other for the fourth time in a duel between Argentines that was worth a spot in the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil. The Fortaleza coach got the better of him, once again, and maintains the writing of never having lost to his compatriot. In all, there are three victories for Vojvoda and a draw, with an 83% advantage for the Lion commander.

Fortaleza’s goals had a contribution from goalkeeper Tiago Volpi, who failed on two occasions. Ronald, Henríquez and David scored for the owners of the house. Gabriel Sara cashed for the Tricolor.

The elimination was also catastrophic for São Paulo on the financial side. If it advanced, the Tricolor would pocket an additional R$7.3 million, reaching more than R$15 million in awards at the Copa do Brasil.
