History in the making: Lewis Hamilton equals Michael Schumacher’s mark

By Gustavo Castilho

English driver reaches 91 wins and writes his name in motorsport history.

The return of the legendary Nürburgring circuit in Germany, after seven years, could not be more remarkable. For Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton needed 261 races to match Michael Schumacher’s 91-win record with Ferrari. As a tribute to his historic achievement, Hamilton received the helmet of former driver Michael Schumacher. The award came from the hands of Mick Schumacher, son of the seven-times champion. It was fate that the Englishman’s ninety-first victory was on German soil.

With the victory, the driver also opened 69 points of advantage from the second place and teammate, the Finnish Valtteri Bottas. Daniel Ricciardo got the first podium for Renault, arriving in third place. The same GP also configured another brand; Finnish Kimi Haikknen broke the race record that previously belonged to Rubens Barrichello. The iceman reached an incredible number of 324 participation.

There are still six races left until the end of the 2020 season, which will have this year only 17 stages in total due to the pandemic. The next race will be in Portugal, on October 25th.
