Turning around, Atlético-MG beats Bahia and wins the Brazilian Championship

Victory 3-2 ends Rooster’s 50-year wait without the national title

Goodbye Fast! After 50 years Atlético-MG is the Brazilian champion. Galo reached the national title this Thursday, beating Bahia in a comeback at Arena Fonte Nova: 3-2. The first and only time the team had won the trophy was in 1971. The miners had already hit the crossbar five times with runners-up in 1977, 1980, 1999, 2012 and 2015.

With the victory, Galo reached 81 points and is no longer at risk of being reached by vice-leader Flamengo, who has 11 points less and only three games to play. Bahia, on the other hand, is still in the relegation zone: it is 17th, with 40 points.

After a balanced first half, the tricolor from Bahia opened 2-0 in the second stage, with goals from Luiz Otávio and Gilberto, but saw the visitors turn in six minutes: Hulk did it with a penalty and Keno left two more, one of them a great goal .

With only two rounds to go in the Brasileirão, Atlético will enter the field just to fulfill the table. The Brazilian champion’s cup will be delivered on Sunday’s game, when the team receives the Red Bull Bragantino at Mineirão.

Also on Sunday, Bahia will face Fluminense, again at Arena Fonte Nova, for the 37th round of the Brasileirão. Only the victory matters for the Bahians, if they still want to stay in the first division. The tricolor from Rio tries to enter the G-4 and to guarantee a direct spot for the Copa Libertadores da América 2022.
